About the work
There is something strangely organic about GIGER BIRD.
Built from a simple black and gold palette, the piece began with a gold surface layered over a black base. Rather than adding the detail, It is removed, brushing back through the gold to reveal the darkness underneath.
The result is a feather-like texture that almost seems to move across the canvas. Depending on the light, the gold shifts between metallic, earthy and almost bronze tones, while the black underneath gives the piece a surprising amount of depth.
The title comes from that slightly unsettling combination of beauty and darkness. It feels natural at first glance, but there is something alien about it too. A bird that perhaps shouldn't exist.
Small in scale, but with a surprisingly big presence.
