About the work
Woolworths recently released its latest series of Disney collectible Ooshies - small plasticy rubber figurines given free with qualifying purchases. The response was immediate and predictable: queuing, hoarding, trading, and the particular social media hysteria that attaches itself to objects made scarce by artificial demand.
A single Ooshie (Jessie, Toy Story) was taken, sprayed gold, and listed on eBay.
The gold changed nothing about the object. It remained the same mass-produced figure it had always been. The listing attracted 81 views and 9 bids over three days. It sold for $17.50.
The gold didn't create the value. The attention did. Which is, of course, exactly how the original rush worked.
