About the work
Smile was made immediately after a routine visit to the doctor. A mental health check-in. The kind of appointment that asks you to rate things on a scale and sends you home with something to think about.
The face on the canvas is recognisable. Two eyes, a mouth. It is smiling. The golden and white teeth are visible. The eyes are flicking up.
Everyone knows this smile. The one that appears in waiting rooms, at work, at family dinners. The one that is technically correct.
"I painted exactly what it felt like my face was doing." - Adam Noakes
